Self-Administer vs. Publishing Admin vs. Publishing Deal
Three different ways to handle the publishing side of your songs — compared honestly, side by side.
🧑💻 Self-Administer
- Cost
- Free, aside from your own time — you register with your PRO, the MLC, and any others yourself.
- Effort
- High — you're responsible for every registration, everywhere.
- Ownership
- You keep 100% of your publishing.
- Global coverage
- Only what you personally register for, country by country.
- Best for
- Songwriters comfortable with paperwork who want to keep every cent and full control.
🌐 Publishing Administrator
- Cost
- A signup fee plus a percentage of royalties collected (e.g. services like Songtrust).
- Effort
- Low — they register and collect on your behalf across their existing network.
- Ownership
- You keep ownership; they only administer and collect.
- Global coverage
- Broad — often catches international royalties you'd likely miss self-administering.
- Best for
- Artists who want wider coverage without doing it all manually themselves.
🤝 Traditional Publishing Deal
- Cost
- No upfront cost to you — but the publisher takes an ongoing share, sometimes in exchange for an advance.
- Effort
- Low — the publisher handles registration, collection, and often active pitching.
- Ownership
- Often partial or full transfer of publishing rights, depending on the specific deal.
- Global coverage
- Extensive, typically with active sync and placement pitching included.
- Best for
- Songwriters who value upfront investment and active promotion more than retaining full ownership.
There's no universally "right" path — it depends on how much of your publishing income you're willing to share in exchange for how much effort and reach you get back. This is general information, not financial or legal advice.
